NON-SURGICAL OPTIONS

What makes Dr. Zaharoff's non-surgical approach unique?

In the past, many people suffering from physical pain or injury either lived with the pain or opted for surgery. Most injuries to muscles, bones, and joints, however, do not require surgery.

The non-surgical approach available from an experienced Physiatrist (or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physician) such as Dr. Zaharoff is an aggressive and comprehensive alternative. A rehabilitative, non-surgical approach may not only prevent, reduce, or eliminate physical pain, in many cases it may be a less expensive alternative and require less total recovery time than surgery.

Dr. Zaharoff's approach encourages individuals to become active participants in their own health and fitness. Initially, a variety of methods may be used to control pain. However, it is important to educate individuals about eliminating stress and strain from their lives in order to enhance their recovery. Likewise, once pain is controlled, it is important for individuals to learn how to maintain themselves through a safe, well-structured home program. Ultimately, an individual must be responsible to participate in their own care in order to be empowered in their long-term health and fitness.

What about Patient-Doctor Communication?

The non-surgical approach requires a high degree of patient-doctor communication. During the evaluation process, Dr. Zaharoff will review the history of your injury and perform a comprehensive physical evaluation. Additional diagnostic tests may be ordered to help determine the source of the pain, injury, or disability. She will then develop a detailed rehabilitation plan, incorporating non-surgical treatment methods with appropriate goals and timelines. Dr. Zaharoff monitors all progress by communication with the treatment team and through follow-up patient visits.

What if I am seeing more than one health care professional for my condition?

Comprehensive care requires a team approach and effective communication among the team. Dr. Zaharoff works with all of the individuals who may be involved in your care including physical therapists, chiropractors, podiatrists, and other health professionals. She will also make appropriate recommendations and referrals for any other medical services necessary for your care. Other options, including surgery, may be reviewed if indicated.

What if surgery is needed?

Pre- and post-operative rehabilitation programs may also be developed as needed. These programs help teach patients what to expect from surgery, how to prepare themselves for surgery and what options are available post-operatively to assist in their recovery from surgery.

Dr. Zaharoff's individualized post-operative rehabilitation programs may include specific therapies to enhance strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and independence. All programs are individualized to meet the needs of each patient.
